What is kanban?
TechniqueKanbanwas initiated by Toyota under the leadership of Taiichi Ohno, known as the creator of the Toyota Production System. Ohno saw inefficiencies in his production line and looked for ways to improve his processes. A car is a complex product to build.
The number of components used during its assembly if not properly managed can be highly inefficient. Ohno saw how unnecessary inventory and low levels of productivity were evident in their business and decided to take action. Inspired by the technique used in supermarkets (if some products are missing, an employee adds them) and decided to implement it on the production line.
To visualize what products were in short supply, Ohano used visual cues in the form of cards to indicate demand for a component. Todaykanbanis the basis for work in a huge number of projects in offices around the world.
Kanbanis based on two basic rules:visualization of the work processandlimiting the amount of it performed at a specific moment.The basis of every Kanban system is the division of work flow into at least 3 categories:
- Backlog column– things to do in the indefinite future,
- Work in progress column(In Progress), containing only the elements we are currently working on, with a limit application,
- Done columnthat have been completed.
There may be more columns. Kanban is a very flexible method that allows you to adapt the process to the requirements of a given project or the needs of the organization. As the process develops, the table can grow or shrink by adding additional columns, e.g. „to be done in the next 2 weeks” or „testing”, etc.
What is kanban and what are the advantages of using the system?
Results of working withKanbanthey make the system, first of all, very effective and, above all, simple. Introducing employees or stakeholders to the process does not require much work. What else do we gain from working with Kanban?
- Simplifying communication processes,
- Better concentration among team members (limited number of elements they can work on at a given time)
- Reducing waste– it’s easy to prevent your team from doing work that isn’t needed, doubling up, or focusing on things that aren’t important. The Project Manager sets things to do in „To Do”, thanks to which he gains control over the process,
- Ongoing replenishment of elements– because the number of tasks is limited, the Project Manager sees the number of tasks performed by a given person and can easily add new ones or 'disable’ those that have a lower priority,
